BUMN Commitment to Develop Green & Smart Port to Support Climate Change Mitigation at COP26

Glasgow, 5 November 2021 – Two State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) namely PT Superintending Company of Indonesia (Persero) or SUCOFINDO and PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) or Pelindo support efforts to mitigate the climate crisis, especially in the context of reducing carbon emissions and sustainability biodiversity at the 26th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP26) which took place in Glasgow, United Kingdom. This activity will be held online and offline on 31 October – 12 November 2021.

On this occasion, the Indonesian Pavilion COP26 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) delivered one of the Talk Show Sessions with the theme Green and Smart Ports In Climate Actions. The President Director of SUCOFINDO, Mas Wigrantoro Roes Setiyadi delivered a presentation entitled Smart Port through Digitalized System and Energy Efficiency Practices in Mitigating Climate Change.

In accordance with the agreement at COP21 stated in the Paris Agreement, Indonesia is committed to climate change mitigation with an emission reduction plan. Deputy Minister of BUMN 1, Pahala Nugraha Mansury said in his presentation that in achieving the target to reduce carbon emissions, the Ministry of BUMN collaborates with BUMN companies. "The Ministry of SOEs has a target in order to reduce carbon emissions through state-owned companies it owns."

Furthermore, Pahala added that, “The Green Port Guideline is one of the important efforts in reducing carbon emissions, which has been developed by SUCOFINDO as a surveyor company, to measure against predetermined standards. We are optimistic that our surveyor company can drive developments in industrial clusters, including those related to reducing emissions in Indonesia.”

President Director of PT SUCOFINDO (Persero), Mas Wigrantoro Roes Setiyadi explained, “SUCOFINDO responded to several strategic issues and referred to several regulations when starting studies and developing Green Port Guidelines, one of which refers to the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 51 of 2015, and attention to issues of efficient use of energy consumption, use of renewable energy, and environmental aspects. We have assisted Pelindo and several ports in Indonesia to implement the Green Port Guidelines.

Our interaction with Pelindo, is very intense, and ensures that the parameters agreed by the parties can be measured and meet the agreed standards, so that we can ensure that these guidelines can be implemented.

Mas Wigrantoro said that, "The key success in implementing Green Port development is intensive involvement, utilizing various sources in adapting and implementing Green Port guidelines, making continuous improvements to the assessment criteria and measurable impacts," explained Mas Wigrantoro.

After successfully collaborating with ports in developing the implementation of the Green Port Guideline, currently SUCOFINDO is pushing for the transition port of implementation to the next stage, namely Smart Port. Through the implementation of Smart ports, it is hoped that ports can increase productivity and efficiency in business processes. This is the next response to adapting the challenges of Industry 4.0 by aligning international principles and perspectives on Smart Ports to ports in Indonesia and synergizing climate change mitigation actions.

Through the same talkshow, President Director of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Arif Suhartono also conveyed special attention to Green and Smart Ports In Climate Actions through a presentation entitled Developing Green and Smart Port Management Through Port Wastes Management.

Starting October 1, 2021, the Port BUMNs, namely PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I, II, III and IV (Persero) have officially become one, namely PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) through a merger process. One of the most important post-merger programs is standardization of operations, including digitization. Digitization at the Port is an initiative that is in line with the reforestation program, due to the more efficient use of resources in the operational process, environmentally friendly waste management and faster loading and unloading times thereby reducing waiting time for ships at the port.

"This digitalization program must also be followed by the digitization of stakeholders so that all business processes become more efficient," said Arif Suhartono.

Pelindo's digitization program covers almost all operational activities starting from Seaside, Terminal, Line 2, in the back office and the interaction process with customers.

Digitalization in the port business is a must because it can improve port services by responding to business challenges and supporting environmental sustainability through efficient and clean operational activities.

"We manage the New Priok Container Terminal One (NPCT1) container terminal in Jakarta which is directly connected to toll access to minimize traffic congestion which results in minimal pollution. In Surabaya, we manage Teluk Lamong Terminal, which is Pelindo's Green Terminal Initiative, namely a port with an environmentally friendly operating design," said Arif Suhartono in his presentation.

At the end of the presentation, Arif Suhartono said that Pelindo had planted more than 40,000 mangrove trees in several areas throughout Indonesia only in the first half of 2021 as part of Indonesia's grand plan to rehabilitate mangrove forests led by the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment.

"Our program is to have an additional 375,000 mangrove trees by the end of this year," said Arif Suhartono.

Arif Suhartono also said that one of the most important things to preserve mangrove forests is to involve the participation of local communities to protect them by encouraging people to benefit from the mangroves themselves.
