Semarang (10/06) - A total of 1,758 kg of waste of various types was successfully collected in the beach clean-up action carried out by Pelindo Group together with the Environment Agency of Semarang City and the community at Tirang Beach, Semarang, Saturday (10/06). This amount consists of 416 kg of organic waste and 1,342 kg of inorganic waste. The beach clean-up action is carried out as a means of educating the public to be aware of keeping the environment clean, especially in disposing of trash in a designated place.
Corporate Secretary of PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas Widyaswendra said the beach clean-up action was a form of the company's concern for the surrounding environment. He said the marine environment is closely related to companies that have a port service business. The beach cleanup carried out by the Pelindo Group coincides with the 2023 World Environment Day commemoration with the theme "Solutions to Plastic Pollution".
"From the waste that was collected, 75 percent or 1,301 kg was plastic waste. From this we know that currently there are still many people who throw garbage carelessly which causes the environment to become dirty, one of which is Tirang Beach," said Widyaswendra.
On this occasion, the Pelindo Group through the Pelindo Cares program handed over assistance to the Semarang City Environment Service. The assistance provided was in the form of supporting equipment for waste management such as trash cans, garbage scales, and other equipment. Widyaswendra said that the Pelindo Cares program is a continuous program. Prior to the beach clean-up action, Widyaswendra said PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas had planted 55,000 mangrove seedlings in Surabaya. In 2023 PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas will plant 125,000 mangrove seedlings in various regions in Indonesia. Apart from planting mangroves, his party will also carry out rehabilitation of coral reefs and planting a number of trees.
"We already have a long-term work plan to help preserve the environment, so it's not only finished with this activity but there are still other programs," he said.
Semarang City Regional Secretary Iswar Aminuddin welcomed the Tirang Beach clean-up action carried out by the Pelindo Group. According to him, it takes a joint commitment to maintain cleanliness and environmental sustainability. Environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility, especially the community. His party is always open to anyone who will provide support to the Semarang City Government in keeping the environment clean.
"The government facilitates and provides support, but what is more important is the awareness of the community itself to dispose of waste in its place and reduce the production of waste, especially plastic," he stressed.
Furthermore, Iswar said that Tirang Beach is one of the remaining tourist beaches in Semarang City. Tirang Beach is currently a tourist destination for local people. For this reason, public concern in maintaining the cleanliness of the Tirang Beach environment is needed so that it remains a comfortable tourist location.
